Writer's Guidelines

Spigot Science Magazine
for Kids and Classrooms

An Interdisciplinary eZine for
Upper Elementary and Middle School Students

Spigot is a themed magazine. Each issue is built around one concept. Please become familiar with our different features. Use the Table of Contents to see that articles, while addressing the theme, are written for use in other subjects: science, geography, math, language arts, social studies, health, and the arts. Send your completed article or idea as a query to vgirandola@spigotsciencemag.com.

As you prepare an article for submission, please follow these guidelines:

1. Our target audience is students in upper elementary and middle school grades.

2. The suggested length is between 300-400 words.

3. The reading level should be 5/6th grade.

4. There should be no violence, abusive language, or negativity in the submission.

5. Please check facts carefully, then check them again.

6. Digital photography may accompany submission. The name of the photographer or picture source should be included.  All pictures must be copyright-free or used with permission.

7. The article should reflect familiarity with the national science standards.

8. Each article should be written with an underlying skill in mind and should be suited to development of a related skill activity. (individual, small group, whole class)

9. All submissions will be carefully screened for clarity and reading level. Authors may be asked to reword and rewrite.
