Spigot Science Article Connections
In Spigot themed publications, subject areas are called Connections.  Publications have a single science theme, and we link all of the connections to the theme to promote depth in science instruction across the curriculum.

The descriptions and ideas below are intended to trigger thoughts about how the theme could be addressed in each of our Connections.  The notes below are intended to help potential Spigot writers create proposals that relate to our themes.*  These are only ideas to show possibilities.  We are open to different article ideas.  The only exceptions are the ideas with “already contracted” after them.  These have already been accepted for publication, but we include them as an illustration of what we accept.

Articles must demonstrate familiarity with our mission statement, our Writer’s Guidelines, and Spigot Science publications.  These are found on the Spigot Science web site.  We reserve the right to edit any submitted article to fit the purposes of our publications.

*In the description examples, the name of a publication is followed by the topic of an article that relates to the connection: i.e., Motion (theme) – Newton’s laws (article idea).

Spigot Connections Description Next Publication – Motion Article Ideas
Science Basic science principles, descriptive information, and inquiry skills. (i.e., Motion – Newton’s laws)
  • What are Newton’s laws and where/when do we see them?
  • What causes things to move?
  • Gravity
  • How/why planes fly
  • Galileo’s experiments at Pisa
  • How our bodies move (already contracted)
Technology Equipment that relates to the theme.  (i.e., Oceans – unmanned submarine, Nereus)
  • Motion detectors
  • Anti-gravity machines
Engineering Innovations, inventions, and design that affect the theme.  Show what engineers do  (i.e., Oceans – ocean engineering)
  • Show engineering fields involving motion
  • Find a specific motion project and describe the engineering that is necessary.
Math Graphic and basic math that relates to the theme, forms of measurement and tools. (i.e., Trees – stem and leaf plot)
  • Speed of light
  • Motion formulas explained simply
Geography Relate places on Earth or in the universe connected with the theme.  Include maps where relevant. (i.e., Changing Earth – earth plates, volcanoes, and earthquakes)
  • Motion of Earth
  • Motion in universe – planets, galaxies
Language Arts Reading, writing, speaking, and listening–create language activities around the theme. (i.e., Ecosystems – Spigot Theater: Biomes play)
  • Poetry – words in motion
  • How words show movement
Social Studies Events that show how people live and interrelate around the theme.  (i.e., Bugs – where are the bees?)
  • Brief history of motion – who were the leaders in understanding motion
  • Nomads – life in motion
Health Health or safety component.  (i.e., Sound – sound can be dangerous to your health)
  • Why motion causes tummy aches (already contracted).
Arts Painting and drawing, sculpture, dance, singing, instrumental music, etc. are all possible areas.  (i.e., Design – moving art)
  • Mobiles
  • Dance movement
